  • Topics and objectives:

The focus of "Neue Heimat Israel" and the didactic considerations are the narratives of people who have experienced traumatic cuts in their lives. The memories of eyewitnesses and contemporary witnesses convey how historical events have affected their lives, how they have dealt with them personally and what interpretations they give to the past from the present perspective.

  • Sequence of activities - methodology:

The core of the learning modules focuses on attentive and accurate listening and observing to promote empathetic understanding. The pupils should not only be able to deal with the issue of remembrance, but also get the opportunity to reflect on the feelings that the stories might trigger. Therefore, the sensitization of processes of self-perception and foreign perception is given wide space. The interview excerpts can be viewed via two possible approaches: 1) Video portraits of eyewitnesses (biographical approach): These are short and concise depictions of the life of a human being. For this purpose, the interview sequences were enriched with photos and recordings of the interviews in Israel. The employment with one (or more) video portraits is recommended as an introduction to the work with the interviews. 2) Thematic videos: These are not intended as independent short films, but are related to the learning modules. Based on remembered, narrated and videotaped life stories, the students deal with seven topics that do not reduce people to a victim status but present them in their diversity and as creators of their own history.

The core of the learning modules focuses on attentive and accurate listening and observing in order to promote empathetic understanding. • Indicators of success:

Since the memories and subjective experiences are of much greater importance than the presentation of facts, the context of the interview, the narrative itself, its language as well as facial expressions and gestures must be addressed. Here, on the part of the students irritations are not only allowed, but even wanted. Especially the sometimes visible discrepancy between the experience and the narrated can contribute to the fact that students acquire the competence to deal with the format "contemporary witness interview".
