National/local specifities (e.g. activity targeted to Swedish school students)Topics and objectives:
Never in human history have so many people been on the run as today: 66 million. They have all experienced terrible things, are now in a precarious position and do not know what their future will look like. People also had to flee from annihilation in the Holocaust. Escape is an urgent present and historical phenomenon. Less and less of the people who fled in the 1930s and 1940s can relate their experiences; and yet the narration of those affected remains the most impressive source for adolescents. The App „Fliehen vor dem Holocaust. Meine Begegnung mit Geflüchteten“ allows young people access to these historical experiences through the medium of film.Materials used:

The students download the app to their computer, tablet or smartphone. Then they are introduced to the topic and the upcoming encounter with one of five eyewitnesses and eyewitnesses with a trailer. All stories presented are about escaping the Holocaust. The escape stories are very different: a precautionary escape, an escape from the persecution or even during the death march of concentration camp prisoners. The students then watch a video interview of about 20 minutes duration. The narrative is accompanied by short explanations and is divided into four aspects. The young people choose two aspects that they want to deepen. This leads them, after watching the film, to documents and further information, with the help of which they analyze the interview and formulate their own thoughts on it. Their results are stored in a personal album. At the end of their work, after about two hours, the students send their document to a person of their choice, in addition to their teacher. They thus have an album that also serves as a basis for a joint evaluation and an exchange of ideas.Length of activity:

Informal verbal feedbackCore content knowledge and transferable skills:
The app facilitates individual learning: The students select a person, deepen individual aspects of interest and create a personal album of their encounter. By communicating these results to someone and / or exchanging them in class, they learn from each other. They learn to combine memories with historical documents as well as to consider both soucres critically.Indicators of success:
The app can be used individually, in a teaching setting or in a group setting outside school. In a school seeting, it can be used in classroom sessions, plenary sessions (with a whiteboard) or in individual or partner work, as well as in a "flipped classroom", a combination of home and school work. The versatile use is facilitated by an uncomplicated access. During use, no internet access is required. The documents for the teacher can be downloaded as a PDF. They can also be made accessible to the pupils.Educational coordinator contact details:
